The Clement Manyathela Show: The Importance of Bilingualism/Multilingualism in Children

Bilingualism is the capacity to express thoughts, ideas, and concepts in more than one language. Being bilingual and biliterate allows individuals to switch between two different language systems, which keeps their brains active and flexible. Research indicates that bilingual people have an easier time understanding math concepts and solving word problems, developing strong thinking skills, using logic, focusing, remembering, making decisions, thinking about language, and learning other languages compared to their non-bilingual peers.

It is widely acknowledged by researchers that the earlier a child begins learning a second language, the better. Some researchers suggest that second language acquisition skills peak at or before the age of 6 or 7, while others argue that this window extends through puberty.
